Affogato al Caffè or Affogato Coffee is a fresh and delicious dessert made with ice cream, coffee, heavy cream, and chocolate. In Italy, you can find it everywhere, because everyone is crazy about it!
The coffee Affogato is a sin of gluttony that never tires and always leads to temptation. Easy to prepare and excellent to savor at the end of a meal. A vanilla ice cream to dip into a cup of coffee, for a delicate hot-cold mix full of flavor.
In the summer, there is no self-respecting bar that doesn’t offer you delicious Affogato Coffee. Some add liqueur, some instant coffee, and some hazelnut ice cream. In short, the variations are many. The one I’m going to show you is made with homemade vanilla ice cream, without an ice cream maker, and cold coffee! You will be very pleased to tell your guests that you have prepared this summer Italian dessert from scratch!
Affogato Coffee Ingredients
- Heavy cream
- Pure vanilla extract
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Italian coffee (unsweetened) – Italian coffee is low, concentrated, and aromatic. You can prepare Italian coffee with a Moka pot or with a Coffee espresso machine.
- Topping whipped cream – For faster preparation, you can use spray whipped cream to decorate your Affogato al Caffè. But if you prefer, you can use whipping cream, just increase the amount indicated for the preparation of vanilla ice cream.
- Chopped dark chocolate for garnish
How to Make Affogato Coffee Dessert
The Affogato Coffee recipe is extremely simple. All you need to do is put a scoop of ice cream in the cup, then pour the coffee, then serve immediately. Here are the steps in detail.
Prepare the Vanilla Ice Cream. This ice cream is made with 3 simple ingredients and no ice cream maker is required! Pour the cold heavy cream into the chilled whipping bowl. Start whipping at medium speed of the mixer until light traces of the whisk remain on the surface. Whip for about 3 more minutes. Add vanilla and condensed milk. Mix well and place in the freezer for at least 6 hours.
Prepare the Coffee. Prepare Italian coffee with your Moka coffee pot or espresso machine. Allow to cool.
Assemble Affogato Coffee. To serve your “Affogato al Caffè”, take 4 glasses, add about 100 g of vanilla ice cream to each glass, and pour over 50 ml of cold coffee (1). Decorate with whipped cream (2) and dark chocolate pieces (you can use ready-made cream or make it at home). Serve immediately!

If you prepare it as a dessert to be served after a meal, and you have many guests, the best thing is to place the scoops of ice cream inside the cups and bring the coffee and a dollop of cream separately. In this way, the diners will be able to dose the flavors according to their tastes.
NOTE. You should prepare this dessert absolutely at the serving time otherwise, the whipped cream, which makes everything very spectacular, risks falling apart, and this would force you to eat the heavy cream first and then the rest. On the other hand, you just need to have cold coffee, vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream (ready-made whipped cream will do) ready.

Ingredients
For vanilla ice cream:
- 250 ml Heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Pure vanilla extract
- 220 g Sweetened condensed milk
For Affogato Coffee dessert :
- 400 g Vanilla ice cream (see ingredients above)
- 200 ml Italian coffee unsweetened
- 250 g Whipped cream for topping
- Chopped dark chocolate for garnish
